Scandium (III) oxide, or scandia, is an inorganic compound with the formula Sc2O3. It is one of several oxides of rare earth elements and has a high melting point. It is used in the preparation of other scandium compounds as well as in high temperature systems (because of its heat resistance and thermal shock), electronic ceramics and glass composition (as a helper material).

Production

Scandium oxide is the primary form of refined scandium produced by the mining industry. Scandium-rich ores, such as thortveitite (Sc,Y)2(Si2O7) and kolbeckite ScPO4·2H2O are rare, however trace amounts of scandium are present in many other minerals. Scandium oxide is therefore predominantly produced as a by-product from the extraction of other elements. The refined scandium oxide raw material of Hunan oriental Scandium comes from the waste acid of titanium dioxide in our group, LB group, which is the 3rd largest titanium dioxide manufacturer in the world.

The refined scandium oxide is a primary form of high purity Sc2O3, its production is much larger than high purity scandium oxide (4N/5N/5N5) powder, price is lower accordingly.

Application

Refined scandium oxide is the start point for all scandium chemistry. Scandium oxide is mainly used as the raw material of scandium metal and scandium products. It is used in metallurgical industry to manufacture alloy and can be used as the emission material of thermal electron exchanger in nuclear industry. It can be used in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, single substrate of memory memory, solid magnetic cooling medium, inhibitor, samarium cobalt magnet additive, X-ray sensitization screen, magnetic cooling agent for various phosphors, neutron absorption material in atomic reactor, magnetic bubble material, sensitization screen material. It is also used in optical glass and electronic industry.
